In 8 ball you pot your group (solids or stripes) and then the 8 ball; in 9 ball you must always hit the lowest-numbered ball first, and potting the 9 ball wins. 9 ball is faster and less predictable; 8 ball needs more planning.
| 8 Ball | 9 Ball | |
|---|---|---|
| Balls | 15 + cue ball | 9 + cue ball |
| Rack | Triangle | Diamond |
| Legal hit | A ball of your group | Lowest-numbered ball on the table |
| How to win | Pot your group, then the 8 ball in a called pocket | Pot the 9 ball legally, at any time |
| Feel | Strategic, safeties matter | Fast, combinations matter |
